Community Spotlight: Dwarves, Stunning Halflings & Sláine Goes To War
April 23, 2025 by crew
Come and join us for another delve into the Projects to find the best of the best from the last week or so. We'll be getting stuck into lots of great-looking miniature wargaming painting and hobbying this week...
...always let us know what YOU have been working on and share it across the site.
Dwarves by scribbs
We start off this week with a look at the work of scribbs, who has been painting up a nice set of Dwarves from the InfamousJT collection. These miniatures have a brilliant Oldhammer quality to them and remind me a lot of the excellent sculpts that you would have got back in the day when Dwarves weren't always tied to the now-common Scandinavian aesthetic.
The work by scribbs is excellent and it's nice to see all the different ways that these miniatures have been brought to life. I love the work on the gold for the knight above and that lovely flowing blue cloak. There is some real dynamism in the sculpt, which is levelled up by the painting.
I also really liked the Dwarf Maiden, who looks like she's fed up with mead and grog and instead has turned to a nice wine, perhaps?
scribbs has managed to capture her expression really nicely and I think that they have done a solid job on her robe, getting across that Lady Of The Lake vibe without having to resort to a pure white. A solid miniature that slots in well with the existing Dwarf Knight that we saw above.
There are loads of Dwarves in scribb's collection and it's wonderful looking through this and seeing the paint jobs bringing the miniatures to life. The swirling magic in that orb held by the Wizard on the left is excellent and certainly draws the eye. The rocky bases are also a nice touch and ground the Dwarves in one of their mountain holds.
Halfling Bust by 144artist
We move to another creature of small stature but in a very different way. 144artist has been tackling the challenge of a bust and chose this wonderful Halfling from the folks at Big Child Creative.
This piece isn't completely finished yet and there is still a bit more work to be done but as you can see, 144artist has already done an amazing job bringing this character to life. I was particularly drawn to the battered and well-worn look of the cloak and his clothing, giving you the idea that he is wandering the roads quite a lot.
I think 144artist's work on the hair is particularly nice and I enjoy that there is a nice degree of layering to the colours so you can see the hair going from dark to light. The slightly dirty shirt that he's wearing also helps add to the storytelling about the character and the bust!
The ferret on the Halfling's shoulder is the last of the elements of the miniature to be truly tackled and as it stands, 144artist has been working on getting the colour just right. There are some reference photos in the project of what 144artist is planning to do. Follow this to see the final product!
Sláine Armies by zoidpinhead
Last but not least, we've got a bit of painting but also a bit of admin. zoidpinhead has been working on taking their miniatures from the Sláine range and adding them into an army for use in games of Midgard Heroic Battles.
zoidpinhead is using the flexibility of the Midgard Heroic Battles rules in order to create a couple of army lists for playing the game. They are working on building lists for the Tribes of the Earth Goddess and the The Hordes of Crom-Cruach. They were inspired by James Morris talking about using Irish myth to inspire their own armies.
I really like the work by zoidpinhead anyway and it was another excellent chance to have a look at the miniatures that they have as part of their collection. It also shows off that the miniatures here, as part of the Sláine collection, can have their time on the tabletop as part of a skirmish wargame but also a much larger mass battle Fantasy wargame.
I also really liked the work that zoidpinhead did for the Falian Shadow Warriors.
The basis for these miniatures are the excellent Victrix Gallic Fanatics which have then been given a coat of black paint, much like the artwork portrays them, with a few subtle highlights and other elements picked out. I really like how daring the finished look is and it's great to see this turning into a collection that involves miniatures from other ranges alongside the Warlord one.

Half sized kniggets, half of a halfling and half naked men! Nothing but half measures! Nice paint jobs though 😉
I see the dwarves and all I can think is the ‘short’ version of King Arthur legend.
Great work all 😀
Thanks for the GB and I’m in exulted company. Great work folks 🙂
Excellent work, all. Good inspiration in all three projects as well.
Thanks for the GB and the kind words; two other excellent projects as well.
