Rebels & Oppressors by richsh

We start off this week with a look at what richsh has been working on. They picked up a bunch of Stargrave miniatures a while ago and have been wanting to do something with them ever since. So, inspired by the likes of Rebel Moon, Andor, Halo and more, they have decided to get to work on painting up a few crews/squads/armies that will find themselves popping up in the likes of Stargrave and OnePageRule's Sci-Fi games.

Stargrave #1 by richsh

The idea is currently to take these miniatures and paint them up to represent the downtrodden who are fighting back against their oppressors. The kits from North Star certainly give you the options for that and so richsh has been working on miniatures using these as a basis plus some other bits and pieces from different North Star plastic sets.

Stargrave #3 by richsh

For example, these Citizens here who have taken up arms against invaders use parts from the Stargrave kits but also from the Frostgrave Barbarian kit. They look great and really fit in with the vibe of settlers on far-flung worlds who are trying to make ends meet as part of a mining colony or something else along those lines.

Looking to put down any insurgency, you also have the Oppressors as you see here, decked out in their military uniforms.

Stargrave #2 by richsh

This has been made to represent the United Continents of Earth or UNICOM in richsh's world and was mostly made using the Troopers box for Stargrave. The gunner possibly came from the Heresy range and the droids are from Etsy. I think they look great and provide you with a grim opposition to the more ragtag rebels that have been created.

I hope these two sets of miniatures end up getting dropped into a game or two of something, whatever it might be, and we get to see them battling it out. I should also mention that I really like the basing that gives off the look of a rubble-strewn city, which might right now be the epicentre of the current conflict.

High Elves by umbra

Next, we turn to Fantasy and the work by umbra on bringing an army of High Elves back to the tabletop. Using Games Workshop's High Elves and other figures from the likes of Last Sword, they are build up an army to use in 9th Age (but they could also fit into The Old World easily enough).

High Elves #1 by Umbra

I was really impressed with umbra's painting, especially on the white that you see here on the character's cloaks and robes. It's hard to get such a crisp white and I think umbra has done a sterling job here on these miniatures. I like that it contrasts so nicely with the deep blue that becomes their signature colour and the mix of silver and pale gold.

You can see this more on the Spearmen below...

High Elves #2 by Umbra

This set of miniatures certainly takes me back and I remember seeing ranks and ranks of these facing off against my Dwarfs on the tabletop. I like that umbra has stayed with the traditional bright green bases for these miniatures to give that retro, Oldhammer feel!

This collection also features some miniatures from Last Sword, as mentioned above, and you can see the Queen's Guard here in their gold armour.

High Elves #3 by Umbra

They don't feel out of place alongside the other miniatures we've seen and I like that the pale gold has worked its way through into the armour of these particular warriors. The Queen's Guard is a solid call for these miniatures and already starts to formulate a narrative as to how this army has been formed and who it serves.

Speedpainting Champions by hazyboy75

Last but not least, we're looking at the work of hazyboy75 who has been painting up some miniatures for use in Kings Of War Champions. They have always wanted to give it a go and thought that Champions would be a good excuse to do so.

Kings Of War Champions #1 by hazyboy75

They got distracted by the likes of Conquest but the way that Champions has been put together means that it might be easy enough for them to dive in without having too much hassle when it comes to army building and the like. They also don't want to be dragged down the route of "I never finished this!" and so will be tackling this with the likes of Speedpaints, washes and of course, plenty of Brainmatter Beige.

The army of choice are the Northern Alliance, which I think is pretty good for someone starting out. It's a lot of natural colours and when they all start to blend together, it doesn't feel too hodgepodge in approach. hazyboy75 has properly smashed out a proper unit and it looks great, especially with the little touch of snow basing underneath.

With the core of the first force done, the focus is now shifting towards some of the other elements of the force, namely the big ol' crow that you find in the set. Once again, the speedpainting was implemented to bring the miniature to life really quickly.

Kings Of War Champions #3 by hazyboy75

I particularly like the painting on the rider from this particular unit. I think the beard stands out really nicely and you've got that little touch of colour coming from the "gem" in his hand, which helps to draw your eye. I think this showcases just how quickly you can get a set of miniatures done for the tabletop, especially Champions, where you don't need too much to begin with.
